Tarika "Matilaba"Lewis
- First woman to demand a place in the BBP in 1967
- She was an artist who made political cartoons that were published in the Black Panther Newspaper
- At first they were displaying men in the BPP but then she shifted her focus and depicted women in the same manner
- Her images depicted the black struggle, the need for arm self defense and control of urban spaces
Angela Davis
- Growing up in Alabama subjected Davis to racism and she wanted to change that
- As a teenager she organized interracial study groups
- Apart of the Communist Party
- Black radical
- Became a member of the BPP in the late 1960's
- Most known for suppling the BPP with weapons that were used to hijack a Marin County Courtroom in attempt to free her lover George Jackson
- The incident landed her America's Most Wanted List
- Author of several books, include Women, Race, and Class
- Currently a professor teaching the history of consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz
Kathleen Cleaver
- Went to Barnard College after moving back to the United States, became involved with the Civil Rights Movement there
- In 1967 she left college to work full time for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)
- In 1968 she meet her husband Eldridge Cleaver who was the minister of information in the BPP, she later joined
- She became the national communication secretary and she organized the campaign to free Huey Newton
- First women to be appointed to the Black Panther Central Committee
Elaine Brown
- In 1965 she moved to LA and meet Jay Kennedy, a member of the American Communist Party
- She became interested in radical politics
- Joined the BPP and helped turned into a supporter of women rights
- In 1974 was elected as the party chief, under her leadership the BPP became involved in conventional politics
- In 1977 she left the United States to move to France
- She published an autobiography in 1992 titled A Taste of Power: A Black Woman's Story
